What makes our walk unique:  As one of the earliest Walk4Hearing events in the nation, we will be having our 6th annul walk in 2011.  We draw from an audience that includes the greater Westchester County area, including Rockland County, and participants come from as far away as New Jersey, Long Island, Staten Island, and elsewhere.  Westchester is home to the New York School for the Deaf, one of the nation's largest residential and commuter schools for the hearing impaired and a major recipient of funds from the walk.  In addition, funds raised at the walk help support local college scholarships for the hearing impaired, scholarships for audiology students, service dogs for children with hearing loss, cochlear implant support groups, and captioning services for chapter meetings and theater performances.

The third annual NYC Walk4Hearing on October 17, 2010 was an enormous success. An exuberant crowd of over 800 participants including 15 alliance organizations made the NYC Walk the largest of 18 HLAA Walks across the country. It was a day filled with sunshine as we celebrated our strength and resilience and raised funds to support our organization’s goals at the local and national level. We exceeded our fundraising goal of $170,000 bringing the three-year NYC Walk total to over $450,000.

An exciting feature of this year’s NYC Walk4Hearing was the use of groundbreaking technology to access opening ceremony speeches. Text from remote CART transcription was streamed directly into walkers’ smart phones, in addition to on-site CART visible on a large screen at the starting line. This new technology will be used at all or most HLAA Walks across the country next year.
