Features of a CapTel phone

Features of a CapTel phone include: 5-line, contrast-controlled liquid crystal display (LCD) screen, ability to review captions during or after a call (approximately 500 lines of conversation can be reviewed in memory after hanging up), menu button, flash button, hold button and light, volume button and light, caption button and light, speed dialing, ringer volume control, conversation volume control, mini-keyboard, 3.5mm headset jack and 2.5mm audio jack.

2-Line Caption Option

CapTel can be used in 2-line mode, which requires two separate telephone lines. With 2-line CapTel, you can turn captions on or off at any point during the call. Callers can dial your phone number directly, instead of calling through the Captioning Service first, and you will still receive captions throughout the call. 2-Line CapTel also allows users to enjoy advanced phone features they may have purchased, such as Call Waiting, while still receiving captions.

A key point to consider is that for 2-line option captions are shown for calls to 9-1-1. 1-line CapTel calls to 911 are treated as Voice Carry Over (VCO) calls.

USB Option for Large Print Captions

Now CapTel users can view conversation captions on their computer screen, at any size or font style they choose. The new CapTel USB option lets you connect the CapTel phone to a computer to view captions on the computer monitor.

Requirements for Using CapTel USB Option:
System Requirements:
Windows XP or Windows 98SE/Windows ME
Available USB port (standard 5-pin Female)
CD-ROM drive (for installation)
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Administrative rights to Windows
Not compatible with Macintosh or Linux operating systems

FCC Ruling.

Effective January 12, 2006, a new regulation by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that any long distance charges associated with TRS calls, including CapTel calls, must be billed to the caller. This ruling affects both regular TRS calls as well as CapTel.

This means, if you make a long distance call on your CapTel phone (or if you are calling a CapTel user and the call is long distance); any long distance charges will be billed to your local telephone number.

The long distance provider you have chosen for your home service is NOT automatically applied to CapTel calls. To make sure long distance charges are billed through your existing long distance service or calling plan, you must contact CapTel Customer Service to indicate which long distance company should be billed.
Please note: This ruling affects long distance calls only, and these charges do not apply to Federal CapTel users. There is never any charge for using the CapTel captioning service.

If you have any questions when you receive your phone bill, please contact your local phone service provider.
