HLAA–NYS

Advocacy

Members of HLAA–NYS are involved in activities to ensure that people with hearing loss are afforded the opportunity to hear everything that the hearing world hears. For example:

We promote accessibility to hospitals for people with hearing loss and support training for hospital staff who communicate with them. Visit Hearing Access for more information. We advocate for legislation that will provide insurance for hearing aids, promote telephone access for all New Yorkers, and protect hearing aid consumers by writing letters to our legislators and sitting on state consumer boards.

Our captioning committee advocates for captioning on TV and in movie theaters. We promote real time captioning of broadway plays.

Members of HLAA–NYS assist the management of movies and other theatres in selecting an assistive listening systems so that patrons with hearing loss don't miss a beat of a movie or performance
We advocated for captioned telephones, now available in New York State.   Read more about captioned telephones. We also advocate for hearing accessibility in courts, houses of worship, museums and other places of public access.
We teach ways for people with hearing loss to advocate for themselves when traveling by car, air, train, or cruise ship. See "Travel Tips for People with Hearing Loss", written by NYSA member Ruth Bernstein, in conjunction with the League for the Hard of Hearing.

We train members to become effective advocates.

We promote the newborn infant screening program mandated by the state of New York.

We participate in training programs for police and fire departments across the state to help them learn how to deal with and become more sensitive to the needs of people with hearing loss.

We participate in local Health Fairs and educate the public about what is available for people with hearing loss, such as assistive listening devices, educational programs and chapters across the state that provide support.
